Where to see Autumn in Cambridgeshire

Autumn in Cambridgeshire

More so than ever this year, families are looking for outdoor activities that limit social contact, but still deliver a fun-filled day out.  Autumn is a beautiful season for being outdoors.  And we are lucky to have lots of great places to visit throughout Cambridgeshire. So, here’s my list of favourite days out, close to Cambridge, this October and November.

Autumn in Cambridgeshire

Wandlebury Country Park

Just a few miles south east of Cambridge city centre is Wandlebury Country Park.  Over 8 miles of pathways and 60 acres of woodland, makes this a great place to see the beautiful Autumn colours.  Especially throughout October and November!  There is plenty of open grassland for kite flying, frisbees and footballs, as well as a den building area in the woods.  Don’t miss the herd of hardy highland cattle, that live outside at the park all year round.

Wicken Fen

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, booking is now essential to visit this beautiful National Trust nature reserve.  Enjoy a walk around the all-weather boardwalk, explore the woodland or take advantage of the many cycle routes.  The unique fen foliage looks wonderful as it changes colour in the low autumn sunlight.  October and November are still great for spotting  dragonflies.  Also look out for migrant birds returning to spend the winter at Wicken Fen.

Milton Country Park

Just north of Cambridge city centre is Milton Country Park – a must for families.  Created from old gravel pits, it has lakes, woodlands and pathways suitable for bikes and wheelchairs.  The colours are stunning during Autumn, particularly at the Rememberence meadow area.  Here, maple and oaks trees were planted to remember allied forces who participated in the D-Day landings.

Wimpole Estate

Advance booking is recommended for this stunning National Trust house and garden.  The large formal gardens, woodland and the animals at Home Farm, make it agreat day out for families.  There are lots of things to see and do at Wimpole Hall for everyone!  The estate is overflowing with autumn colour and there are often plenty of seasonal and special events.  Check the website for details and opening times.

Audeley End House

Based close to the market town of Saffron Walden, Audeley End is a beautiful English Heritage stately home and garden.  Due to Covid-19 restrictions, booking a time slot before you visit is now essential because visitor numbers are limited.  There are a huge variety of mature trees in the grounds, offering a lively display during Autumn.  In addition, visitors can explore what life was like in the Victorian servants quarters.  Meanwhile, families can meet the horses in the stable yard.  Sadly, the children’s playground is currently closed due to Covid restrictions, but there is still plenty of space for families to enjoy the great outdoors.

Beechwoods Nature Reserve

Beechwoods is a small but impressive woodland made up mostly of beech trees.  It’s just a few miles south east of Cambridge City Centre.  This small 10-hectare site boasts an amazing show of colourful leaves and foliage and is at its best towards the end of October. Autumn in Cambridgeshire

This National Trust house and garden has some gorgeous autumn colour throughout its 114 acres as well as plenty for all the family to enjoy.  Therefore, pre-booking your visit is essential.  Make sure you enjoy some of the popular Autumn areas including the Coronation and Jubilee Avenues. Furthermore, download the ‘Autumn bucket list’ activity sheet from the website before you visit to help keep children entertained. If you have time, check out Lode Mill too!

Chippenham Park and Gardens

This beautiful private garden is open to visitors on selected weekends during the year.  Situated east of Cambridge in the village of Chippenahm, this impressive garden is also a popular wedding venue.  Autumn colours are abundant throughout October and November.  In addition, delicious home-made cakes, scones, coffee, tea and barbecued sausages are being laid on in the Potting Shed Cafe.  Check the website for opening dates and times before you travel.
